Unionization

Unions play a significant role in the meat industry. According to estimates by the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union, the primary union representing the meat and poultry industry's work force, 60 percent of meat packing and processing employees are represented by the UFCW. In comparison, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that overall, unions represent 7.9 percent of all private sector employees.
